Risk ratings

Here you can find the current risk ratings for the 138 NHS foundation trusts authorised as at 30 September 2011.

We publish two risk ratings for each NHS foundation trust:

  • financial risk rating (rated 1-5, where 1 represents the highest risk and 5 the lowest); and
  • governance risk rating (rated red, amber-red, amber-green or green).

Foundation trusts' risk ratings are updated each quarter. We also update risk ratings in 'real time' to reflect, for example, a decision to find a trust in significant breach of its terms of authorisation or the Care Quality Commission's regulatory activities. 

You can view the risk ratings for all NHS foundation trusts below, or filter using the A-Z listing. NHS foundation trusts are only allocated risk ratings once they have been authorised for a full quarter.

  • highest risk - high probability of significant breach of authorisation in short-term, e.g. <12 months, unless remedial action is taken
  • risk of significant breach in medium-term, e.g. 12 to 18 months, in absence of remedial action
  • regulatory concerns in one or more components. Significant breach unlikely
  • no regulatory concerns
  • lowest risk - no regulatory concerns

Governance risk rating

  • Red - Likely or actual significant breach of terms of authorisation
  • Amber-red - Material concerns surrounding terms of authorisation
  • Amber-green - Limited concerns surrounding terms of authorisation
  • Green - No material concerns
