Non-executive director Development Programme

As part of Monitor’s commitment to help NHS foundation trusts operate effectively and efficiently, we have designed a programme that helps Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) build upon their personal skills and develop a broad and comprehensive understanding of the NHS, including quality, finance, board dynamics and the strategic challenges facing the health sector.

Monitor, in partnership with the NHS Institute of Improvement & Innovation, the North West Academy, and the East of England SHA has worked to provide non-executive directors with the opportunity to develop their existing skills and add value to the organisations they represent.  The course is delivered by two leading business schools: Cass Business School and Manchester Business School. Over three days, participants will cover a wide range of learning modules, case study exercises and board room simulations in addition to Q&A sessions with leading NHS experts and networking opportunities.

Course outline

The core curriculum below is followed by both Cass and Manchester Business Schools, and focuses on the role of the non-executive director within the unitary board in:

  • developing and implementing strategic change;
  • driving the right culture where constructive challenge around the board table is welcomed as adding value;
  • ensuring clinical quality discussions in the boardroom are not the sole responsibility of the medical and nursing directors; and
  • delivering financial stability over a sustained period, in a tougher economic climate.

Which course should I attend?

The core curriculum is broadly the same across both business schools. However, there will be differences in the teaching styles, methodologies, content and external speakers. Courses are also provided in the different locations of London or Manchester. After reading the course outlines provided by both Cass Business School and Manchester Business School, potential delegates should select the course provider that best meets their needs and preferred learning style.

For full details of each course curriculum see the right hand links to each business school.

"An excellent course covering a wide range of topics. Great to stand back and listen to the presenters and discussions"
