Find out more about Monitor’s proposed new role. Our core duty would be to protect and promote patients’ interests.
In carrying out our sector regulator role, Monitor would license providers of NHS services in England.
The Government has proposed that Monitor takes on responsibility for the pricing of NHS-funded care, working together with the NHS Commissioning Board.
Monitor would have a duty to consider how it can enable or facilitate integrated care, alongside ensuring that competition is fair and that it operates in the interests of patients.
Monitor would support commissioners to ensure that patients could continue to access the care that they need if a healthcare provider fails.
Under the proposed Health and Social Care Bill, Monitor would retain its existing functions of assessing applicant trusts and regulating foundation trusts for a limited time period.
