Licensing providers

The Health and Social Care Act 2012 makes changes to the way NHS service providers will be regulated. These changes include the introduction of a licence for providers of NHS services.

Monitor will issue the licences, which will set out a range of conditions that providers must meet. We will use the licence to carry out our main duty, which is to protect and promote the interests of people who use health care services. We will do this by promoting the provision of services that are economic, efficient and effective, and which maintain or improve the quality of services.

Monitor will have a range of powers to ensure that providers comply with their licence conditions. These powers will include Monitor being able to ask providers to set out how they will go about addressing areas that did not comply.

If you have any questions about licensing, please contact Jessica Dahlstrom at Monitor.
